"A Balinese Gem"
Set within the beautiful open air setting of Chef Mudana’s outdoor kitchen he and his team (Made and Dede) are a treasure to Bali. An absolute delight for all the foodies out there with every ingredient brimming with flavour and exotic scents. A fully immersive experience that will surely get even the most cooking inept excited to be involved.
We opted for the full package including the trip to the markets and hands down was a unique experience to see the workings of Bali’s working fish markets, straight from the boat, filleted, and packaged for us to take.
We’d gladly come back again and do this class or dine at his restaurant.

"Most amazing Indonesian cooking class"
The Jimbaran fish market visit is a must to do for any foodie to experience the origins of the amazing produce used during the class. Chef Mudana and his staff were knowledgeable, friendly and good company. The food was exceptional and best of all you don’t leave with an empty stomach because you eat what you have cooked. If you can’t find the time to do the class but still want to enjoy Chef Muduna’s amazing food and hospitality you need to have dinner at Warung Makar SMS Sanur.

"10/10 authentic cooking class"
Chef Mudana and his team provide an amazing experience. I had a great morning learning to cook several Indonesian dishes. I have Coeliac Disease and Chef Mudana went out of his way to ensure he had gluten free substitutions for me. Sharing a meal together at the end of the class was a highlight. Strong recommend!

"Fun and Informative - Excellent"
I chose this cooking class after reading the reviews on TA and was not disappointed. Chef Mudana collected me from our hotel, then on to a local market for seafood, chicken and vegetables.
We then arrived back at Chef Mudanas cooking school which is in a beautiful, tranquil setting at the rear of his restaurant (Warung) where I was greeted by his friendly assistant who had a Balinese breakfast ready for me to enjoy before commencing the lesson.
The lesson was well planned, informative and very enjoyable. The insight into Balinese food and family life that Chef Mudana shares is fabulous.
After cooking the meals we got to enjoy them for lunch which was delicious.
Thank you, Chef Mudana.
I even returned that night with my family to enjoy a fabulous meal in his restaurant.

"Truly Immersed into the Balinese Culture"
It was a lovely experience, and one that every visitor must take up. Chef Mudana and his two brothers in law were welcoming and pleasant creating a comfortable and relaxed atmosphere when learning the unique dishes. The station was impeccably clean and captured the traditional Balinese environment. It was incredibly interactive and hands on without a single boring or stressful moment. We used the freshest ingredients which we had gathered from the biggest fish market in Bali, which allowed us to cook superb dishes. Although these ingredients were local, he was still sensitive to our dietary restrictions including where we originally live, as he regularly and politely suggested substitutions that can be easily found based upon our given homes. The dishes were delicious and immaculately presented. Sometimes hotels provide activities such as cooking lessons to their guests, however this local company is run and organized by those who truly know the authentic methods and ins and outs of the island. We not only learned how to cook these delightful dishes, but we also were able to learn the unique and interesting Balinese/Hindu culture and its peaceful and fascinating history. It was an experience to be hold and an absolute must when visiting Bali.

"Book it you won't be disappointed "
Chef Mudana cooking experience is fantastic and so well organised. I booked by email from the UK and received prompt replies. The pick up from our hotel in Sanur was punctual and right from start the chef was welcoming, cheerful and ready to share his knowledge and love of food. There were just 4 of us on the course today however some of his classes are larger groups.
Although it started to rain just as we reached the fish market the chef was ready prepared with some umbrellas. The fish and vegetable markets were great to visit and we were encouraged to choose items that we wanted to cook with. The day continued with a traditional Balinese breakfast at the cooking school and the chef shared his knowledge of Balinese cooking the traditional way. With most of the food ready chopped we managed to fit in many different recipes within our morning which we tasted as we went along.
The session ended with a sit down lunch enjoying all the food that we had prepared with the chef showing us other traditions of life in Bali. The same day chef Mudana emailed us all of the recipes as well as giving us a printed copy before we left. If I return to Sanur in the future I will definitely be booking the alternative Indonesian class with the chef offers.

"Three Musketeers of Sanur!"
What a fabulous morning. Nestled in a side street, the setting was lovely. Chef Mudana and his brother In-laws Wayan & Bagus were welcoming and a lot of fun. The food was amazing and plentiful the Jimbaran fish market was interesting and not smelly at all. We both came away with knowledge of things we didn't know about some of the herbs used and a new dinner menu to show off for our family and friends.
We will definitely be back to learn more and to eat in your restaurant Warung Makam SMS which unfortunately we didn't have time to do this trip. Thank you guys for a great experience.

“A must do in Sanur!”
We visited Chef Mudana's cooking class yesterday and were extremely impressed by the personal approach taken by Chef Mudana and his team. The cooking class is held in his family home and along with being taught how to make some amazing Balinese dishes we got to experience true Balinese culture. The morning was fun filled and informative and we felt privileged to learn from Mudana who has an obvious passion for cooking Balinese food. We were very happy that he catered for my husbands love of spicy food and my love of of non spicy food. Think we will be cooking his recipes at home for many years to come.

“So worth it, the reviews don't lie”
Found on Trip Advisor and reviews were so great we gave it a go and so glad we did. Emailing Chef Mudana we were able to discuss what we mainly wanted to learn. My friend likes seafood I don't, she can eat ginger and chilli but I can't, so he tailored it for us. We were even collected and dropped off to where we were staying. He and his happy team had the veggies chopped/sliced already, we know how to do that so we could focus on the recipes, mixtures and methods including using the enormous mortar and pestle. We had sooo much food cooked up we had to call our husbands to come and help eat it. Chef Mudana was so pleased to share with us all. We definitely recommend.

“Personal class with Chef Mudana”
I was staying in nusa dua by myself for a few days in Bali and wanted to experience as much of the culture as possible in a short amount of time. After looking on trip advisor, a cooking class seemed perfect! Why I chose Chef Mudana and you should too over the other options on trip advisor: 1) he is very personal and fun! Great to speak with and he will cater the class to what you are interested in 2) he takes you to the fish market!!! None of the other classes do, they only take you do the local market for vegetables and such. With Mudana you get to go to both! And pick out your fish :) in my case I wanted to add squid to the list of snapper and prawns so he gladly did. The market is really cool to see! 3) you get to experience real Balinese style as chef Mudana has the class and restaurant built into his home! It was beautiful and a really cool setup.
All of our food came out amazing, I'm excited to try it at home. I had a great experience and you should book with chef Mudana before the others!

“Amazing Day”
This cooking course is a must do. Chef Mudana and his family were wonderful hosts. Mudana is a passionate and wonderful chef. The course was really enjoyable starting with a trip to the fish markets and a lovely breakfast at Mudana's home in Sanur. Then onto the cooking which was enjoyable as most of the prep was done so you were able to learn without spending all your time chopping. You still did hands on which I enjoyed and best of all you end up with the best Balinese lunch you will ever eat in Bali.

“Great Balinese Cooking Experience”
We really enjoyed our Balinese cooking experience with Chef Mudana. We were picked up on time and taken to the Jimbaran fish markets where we got supplies. Would be worth a visit on its own. Then back to Chef Mudana's where we cooked six dishes which we then enjoyed for lunch. Chef Mudana takes the time to explain each dish and the mix of ingredients. He got awesome support from Wayan and Made. Would definitely recommend, wonderful hospitality.

“Excellent class”
Chef Mundana is a very patient and well spoken teacher. All the ingredients are pre-prepared by his assistants, Made and Made. I prefer this style of class so I can concentrate on the actual cooking, as opposed to trying to chop and watch at the same time. I highly recommend this class, if you only have time for one class do this one.

“The Ultimate Balinese Culinary Experience”
Looking for something different to do while in Bali? Look no further. Book a class with Chef Mudana and be prepared to be blown away by his extreme courtesy, culinary expertise and truckloads of charm! Choose from the different class options. I highly recommend the Island Delight package, which included pickup and drop off at any villa within Sanur area, a morning trip to the Jimbaran Fish and produce market, a delicious Balinese pancake breakfast with fruits in season, unlimited mineral water (or ask to purchase some young coconut juice from the market if you prefer), cooking instructions and assistance for basic Balinese recipes, a copy of the recipes and a certificate (and a delicious lunch you helped prepare).
I chanced upon a fruit I had not tasted before at the marketplace (snakeskin fruit) and Chef Mudana graciously purchased them so our group could have a taste (it was delicious). Really, you could not be in better hands with his passion for Balinese culture and loquacious nature. You may also get to meet some of his family members.
What a welcoming place and a delightful experience for me. I will definitely book another class when I return to Bali.

“The best cooking class!”
This is the second cooking class that I have attended in Sanur and it was fantastic. Thanks so much Chef Mudana for a great experience.

“Fantastic, highly recommend taking a class as soon as you arrive!”
We were picked up on time by Chef Mudana and taken by comfy car to the fish and produce markets at Jimbaran Bay.
It was great to have the fish and other produce explained. We had seen all of these different, weird and wonderful ingredients at markets, but had no idea what they were, due to the language barrier.
Chef Mudana spoke perfect English and purchased according to our tastes. He has travelled widely, speaks many different languages and delivers a high quality of service.
When we arrived at the class venue, it was held in the family compound, attached to Makan SMS Warung. We experienced family life in the cool, clean oasis with a huge fish pond. Made, the other chef, also showed us how to prepare bamboo leaves, coconut roasting, how to set up a local bbq and lots of tricks to bring out the flavour of the ingredients.
It was amazing! We had the best day ever! The class was small, fun and the dishes were tailored to our taste. So many dishes were cooked, with every step explained and substitutes suggested. Chef Mudana even cooked Chicken Rendang, at our suggestion, the chicken was so juicy, a taste explosion!
We now have the confidence to use all the ideas and suggestions to create these dishes at home, without spending heaps. At the end of the class we had a huge feast! So much healthy, delicious food with so many taste experiences.
I would highly recommend taking this class as soon as visitors arrive, so that they will be informed when visiting the markets and warungs.
We regularly visit Makan SMS Warung for tasty food attached to the class, they also do home deliveries.

“Highlight of any trip to Bali! ”
Just finished a morning with Chef Mudana - I can't recommend his cooking class highly enough! A trip to the fish market in Jimbaran is well worth the early start, and Chef Mudana is delightful company as he takes you step by step through the basics of Balinese cooking. I now feel confident to make many dishes at home, thanks to his easy going demonstrations and obvious understanding of his craft. A wonderful glimpse of local life in Bali away from the beachside resorts.

“Great Man and Great Chef”
My husband and I did the class together. It was just us so very personal 1 on 1 class. We could ask any questions and Chef Mudana would be happy to answer. The class kitchen was lovely and very traditional and clean. The 7.30 pick up for our motel and driven to the local fishmarket and market was my highlight. We bought the fish and squid for our dishes that morning. Would recommend this class to anyone . Thankyou Maduna see you again one day :)

“Doesn't Get Any Better Than This”
I attended Chef Mudana's cooking class, conducted at his own restaurant warung (Makan SMS) in the back streets of Sanur. This is also his family home and the compound is absolutely beautiful, clean and tidy. Once in the cooking area, you first were shown where to wash your hands. Food on the table was covered and food in the fridge was either wrapped in plastic or in sealed containers. I was also asked if I had any allergies to any food. Chef Mudana briefed me with the dishes we were going to prepare, going through each menu, one at a time, and showed the ingredients to be used for each dish. Chef Mudana has a small herb garden and edible plants which we picked and used as needed.
Chef Mudana has amazing knife skills, I couldn't believe it when he finely sliced 2 chillies in a matter of seconds, not even looking at the board.
Chef always asks if you have any questions about anything. We tasted food as we went along, adding more salt and chilli if required. He is so passionate about his food tasting right.
Before plating up, chef made 3 petite cups out of banana leaves, we filled them with small portions of the dishes we had just prepared and they were to be used as an offering. We placed each offering in the little baskets of flowers and incense sticks that were already on each of the 3 amazing statues.
The rijsttafel was put on the table and to add a finishing touch, Chef peeled the skin off of a tomato and made it into a flower.
Thank you Chef and your family, you were so friendly and professional. I highly recommend Chef Mudana's cooking class to anyone.
Chef Mudana, you are very deserving of your excellent reviews. I wish you Good Luck and All the very Best in your future.

“It just could not be more personal, or personable this this!”
As a US/Aussie ex-pat living here in Sanur, bapak Mudana's warung (Makan SMS) has long been my favourite local place. He and his brothers are so warm and gracious, even when I am just driving by on the bike. So, after one year of eating all the delicious food (sajaan sajaan!), I decided I had better learn to cook some. I shared the day's experience with Richard, and the two of us had a ball. The class is conducted within the grounds of the family compound, and you are literally in the heart of the family bosom! The air was soon filled with a cacophony of smells...lemongrass, garlic, chili, kafir lime, grilled meats...a gorgeous olfactory smorgasbord! In the hour and a half that our lesson lasted, we learned to make an astonishing array of dishes, enjoy some good conversation, and finally...sit down and enjoy it over a couple of beers! Pak Mudana is all of the things that each of his perfect reviews suggest and more. You just cannot imagine how enjoyable the day will be, and how well you will be catered and cared for. Suksema bli!!

“Crash course in Indonesian Cooking”
Very well prepared for training of new people the food preparation was mostly completed prior to trainees arrival. Very clean work area with hygiene standards to a high level and all recipes and menu printed and available as you progress through the course I would recommend Chef Mudana without hesitation as he has the patience of a saint haha and a really nice guy

“First-class cooking course”
Many of us enjoy trying different foods when abroad, and this wonderful cooking course is a great way to see how it is done and to then be able to take back some expertise home with you. Chef Murdana is a delightful man who clearly loves what he is doing and is very good at it. His Warung has delicious food, and his cooking class takes place in his adjacent house, in a specially built area.
We had a choice of Indonesian or Balinese cuisine and both of us (there were two people the day I went) chose Indonesian. Although it was also possible to go with Chef Murdana to the markets beforehand, we each opted to just do the cooking. he has worked in hotels and abroad (in both Japan and Singapore) and it's easy to see why he would be sought after elsewhere. I'd never quite thought about it before, but being a chef means that you get instant feedback: people will be happy to tell you how well you'd done. His food is terrific.
Over the course of the morning, we made an assortment of dishes, some of which I have attached as photos. Everything was explained to us, and the recipes are available to us to take home, so we can try for ourselves later. We never felt unduly rushed, got whatever help we needed and felt that we were part of a team creating (an enormous!) lunch. Even if you are a beginner, I am sure that you would enjoy this course and not feel even slightly intimidated. His passion for what he does is quite infectious.
I was surprised to learn how important the basic sauce is, useful in several dishes. Similarly the Gado Gado uses a lovely peanut sauce, useful elsewhere as well. It was amazing to see what can be created from humble beginnings with a little bit of know how. Our course included many dishes, including soup, curry, satay, corn fritters, fish, chicken, vegetables, nasi goreng and a delicious banana dessert. And, as well as learning lots of things, we had a delicious sumptuous lunch to finish off the experience. Fantastic!
It really doesn't get much better than this! Thanks for a great day to Chef Mudana! If you have a chance and are anywhere in southern Bali (including Sanur), try this course. You will not be disappointed, and it will be a highlight of your trip.

“Fish market to feast”
A local restaurant in the back streets of Sanur offers a great cooking experience. Chef Mudana never stops smiling and is serenely calm throughout the conjuring up of 10 amazingly delicious Balinese dishes. As an optional extra, you can join him on the fish and vegetable market run at jimburan beach. It's fascinating seeing all those varieties of fish and seafood lying on slabs of ice. Back at chef mudanas warung( restaurant), after a breakfast of strong Balinese coffee and green pancakes, it was time to roll our sleeves up, get our aprons on and start chopping. Soon the airy kitchen, open on all 4 sides, surrounded by pink bougainvillea and wafting bamboo was filled with an intoxicating fusion of fragrances - lemongrass, garlic, coriander seeds, coconut, chilli, turmeric. The dishes include a whole chicken steamed in a banana leaf, minced chicken charcoal grilled on lemongrass skewers, prawns sizzling in tomato sauce, gado gado, sautéed aubergines and bitter gourd, sweet pancake rolls. When it was all ready, our stomachs rumbling, our mouths watering, we sat down to eat the banquet, more suitable for kings and queens than mere mortals. Highly recommended....do it and dine divinely!

“A perfect way to experience Bali”
I first learned about Chef Mudana’s cooking class after having dinner at his Warung (Warung Makan SMS, which is a must). My sister, brother-in-law, husband, and I took the Balinese cooking class and loved it! Chef Mudana is a very experienced chef (having worked in Japan and Singapore) and is extremely accommodating to days and times to hold the class, based on your availability. He can also accommodate any dietary needs you have.
We were picked up at our villa at 7:30am to go to Jimbaran to see the fisherman pulling in their catch from overnight, and to visit the fish/ vegetable market for the full Balinese experience. It's there that we picked out the fish, meat, fruit and vegetables, and spices we used for the cooking class. Chef Mudana did an excellent job of explaining the types of ingredients that are available in the market, as well as shared about why he chooses specific fish, meat, fruits and vegetables, and spices for cooking. Then, we headed back to the cooking school for a wonderful Balinese breakfast of fresh fruit, sticky rice, casava, and yams, all drizzled with palm sugar syrup. So yummy! After breakfast, we cooked!
Chef Mudana made the experience fun with his super energetic personality. And, the way he explained the technique of making traditional Balinese food was fun and simple. You can tell he loves teaching others to cook. Then, of course, we got to enjoy all the food we cooked (1 soup, 6 dishes, 1 dessert), which was AMAZING! Super fresh and flavorful! And, we even had food left over to take home! You get a certificate at the end, as well as hard copies of all the recipes you cook. I highly, highly recommend Chef Mudana's cooking class. You won’t be disappointed.

“Fantastic day, Chef Mudana has great skill and great humour”
We were picked up from our hotel in Saner and did the Morning session including the trip to Jimbaran Fish Market. The fish market was really interesting and I am glad we did it. Chef choose our fish and imparted his local knowledge on fish and freshness. The class was well organised and a lot of fun for the 2 of us. The highlight would be learning how to make the Balinese Paste (which is the basis of a lot of their cooking) and making an authentic sambal. Finishing off with a delicious meal that we had cooked was fantastic. His facility is lovely and clean and purpose built. We would definitely do again. I have already made the paste, chicken dish and sambal after only being home 2 days. Thanks Mudana you gave me confidence out of my comfort zone.

“Fun, intimate experience.”
My friend and I decided to do an Indonesian cooking class while on our holiday, we chose Chef Mudana.
The day started with our trip to the fish markets to pick up some fresh product and some fruit and veg. Interesting..
Under Chef's happy go lucky and sunny nature we constructed a banquet of Indonesian foods. I am now certified and will happily play chef in my own kitchen reconstructing the skills/recipes taught to us.
I thank you Chef for sharing your time and skills, we had lots of laughs with you and your staff. Fun day.

“We whipped up a scrumptious Balinese rijsttafel in this fun cooking class”
Chef Mudana has a great personality and is a genuine teacher (he's open-minded and continually learning), so this was a very good class, and the by-product (some might argue this was the main product) was an astonishingly tasty Balinese rijsttafel that we were proud to have whipped up from scratch in under 2 hours! In fact it was one of the best meals I'd had in Indonesia after having spent 3 weeks this year specifically exploring Sundanese, Betawi and Balinese cuisines (Javanese and Sumatran cuisines - already relatively more familiar to me - will be next).
Do note that there is only one cooking station, so a larger class (we were the only 2 students at our session on X'mas day) would probably be less hands-on (involving more turn-taking) and more demonstration. I'm in two minds about this, because on the one hand individual cooking stations are clearly more fun and better for learning, but on the other hand Indonesian food is generally cooked in big rather than individual portions.
When I noted that the class's menu only had chicken and seafood, Chef Mudana offered to add a bonus Bumbi Bali (Balinese braised pork) to the menu. And when he learnt that beef rendang is my favourite Indonesian dish, he again brought out his delectable version from his warung (adjacent to his house where our class was held)!
Because there was a fair bit of Bumbu Bali (the basic Balinese spice paste for many of the dishes) left over after the class, we got to take it home as a practical souvenir. Chef liked the souvenir suggestion (it's a good almost-costless marketing tool, and can reinforce the cooking lesson) and indicated that he may incorporate it into future classes!

“Excellent, chef Mudana knows what Balinese cooking is! ”
I did the cookingclass with my friends. It was fantastic! Good preparing from chef Mudana and staff. All receipes where tastfull. We learned a lot. The food was fresh and quality high. Easy to make the receipes at home, explanation from chef was clear. We made 8 delightfull dishes. And at the end we had a good meal together.

“Balinese cooking class”
If you are interested in Balinese or Indonesian cooking we highly recommend Chef Mudhana's cooking class. The class is clear, informative and hands on. The work space is very well appointed and surrounded by edible plants and herbs used in the cooking. Chef Mudhana clearly loves cooking and sharing that love with others.
Our day started with a trip to the local seafood and produce markets to purchase our ingredients. Arriving at Chef Mudhana's home we were greeted by his assistant Made, who had prepared our work space. After breakfast Chef Mudhana led us in creating several amazing dishes. His instructions are clear, easy to follow and the recipes offer flexibility and substitutions for ingredients that may be hard to find in other countries. Chef Mudhana offers a fixed set of recipes and also welcomes requests for particular dishes and works with food allergies and dietary restrictions. Within two hours we had created 9 amazing dishes and gathered enough information and skills to feel confident that we will be able to replicate these dishes on our own at home.
The highlight of the class is that we felt we were cooking with friends, the class was kind, interactive, hands on and, at the end, we all sat down and enjoyed a meal together.

“Amazing experience ”
I'm on a one week holiday in Bali with my daughter for my family reunion and i was looking for things to do in Bali and i came across Chef Mudana's cooking class and it seemed really interesting so i thought why not. When i got in touch with Chef Mudana i had to rearrange my class appointment for a couple times and i thought he would get irritated by the time we come. But at our surprise, he was very nice and genuine. He was not only nice but he was also really precise about the ingredients and steps for the cooking. Cooking with Chef Mudana was an extremely great experience for us. We were really satisfied with our cooking and with our meeting with Chef Mudana. A genuinely kind and experienced Chef.

“Amasing cooking class”
We had met Chef Mudana a number of times after eating at Warung Makan SMS and when we found out that he had started a cooking class in the Family compound behind the Warung we could not resist. The class starts early with a trip to the fish markets in Jimbaran (optional) followed by breakfast back at his place in the tranquil outdoor cooking area with fish ponds and herb garden. My wife and I did the Indonesian cooking class and Chef Mudana is very patient and explains all the processes clearly, in fact he makes the whole process so simple that when we returned home we were able to make the same dishes without any trouble. This was such a relaxing and fun experience and would highly recommend this cooking class to anyone visiting Bali.

“Cooking Class”
Wow.... What an amazing experience, what chef and his team don't know about mixing ingredients, isn't worth knowing, they made the whole class fun, interactive and always ready with alternatives if some of the ingredients wouldn't be available in my home country. I would highly recommend this class for beginners up to expert cooks

“Learn cooking from friends”
The cooking class was a gorgeous marriage of delicious food, good fun and interesting lessons to be learned After a visit to the fish market we enjoyed a nice breakfast before cooking a delicious menu. Chef Mudana is a skilled trainer and moreover a great open minded person to talk and work with. It soon felt like cooking with an old friend. If you are any what interested in cooking this is a MUST do during your stay at Sanur.

“awesome cooking class”
We got to know Chef Mudana during our first visit to Bali when he offered private cooking classes in the villa we stayed. Now he has opened his Warung Makan SMS and in the garden he built a very nice pavillion to hold cooking classes for balinese and indonesian food. My husband and I did the indonesian cooking class and started with a trip to the fishmarket in Jimbaran where we bought fresh fish and vegetables. When we returned to his place it was time for breakfast and afterwards we started cooking. It was great fun to prepare the different dishes like gado-gado, pepes ikan, sate ayam, corn fritters. There was so much food that we had enough for lunch, dinner and a little snack the next day. We really really enjoyed our cooking class with Chef Mudana and really recommend his cooking classes to everyone! It was great fun!

“Kookles”
